Almost ready for her to come!

We're all pre-registered at the hospital (which means we'll only have a teeny bit of paperwork to fill out after she's born, and none when we check in), and the nursery is almost done! We painted last night and are going to set everything up tonight. As soon as the bathroom is finished, which should be next week sometime, we'll officially be ready for her to come!

Bran keeps telling me to hold her in until at least next weekend - I told him I'd do my best, but that I can make no guarantees ;)

How big is baby?

38 Weeks - She's as long as a Leek!

How far along: 38 weeks - only 2 or so to go!

Maternity Clothes: I wore "real clothes" for the first time today. I had been living in my sweats, but finally felt well enough to go to church this morning in some pants and my cute striped gap maternity sweater that my mom bought for me. It felt so good to dress nice!

Stretch Marks: The ones I got on my belly look so good compared to how they looked when I had the rash. No new ones!

Sleep: SO MUCH BETTER! I've been falling asleep around 12 and waking up at 3 or 4, then sleeping until my alarm goes off, which is what I was doing before I got the rash. It's been wonderful getting a good night's sleep :)

Best Moment this Week: Thursday morning when I woke up to no itch!

Movement: She's been goin crazy! I'm thinking maybe she's throwing herself a "moving out" party? Eh? Eh?

Food Cravings: got some ice cream with jen today - yum!!

Gender: She's most definitely all girl!

Labor Signs: Still nothing, but I'm much more ok with this now that I can get comfortable for more than 3 minutes!

Belly Button: Almost a full-on outie.

What I Miss: Being able to walk around all day without having my ankles swell to the size of small beluga whales.

What I'm Looking Forward to this Week: Getting to paint the nursery on Tuesday! I'm planning on being the supervisor/drink fetcher while everyone else does the hard work.

Weekly Wisdom: Patience is a virtue! So many women get antsy at this stage in their pregnancy, just dying to have their baby. My goal is to patiently wait on God's timing!

Nursery Furniture

It's been a little while since I posted my last "Nursery Update", so I thought I'd get everyone caught up with what we're thinking these days. If you care to see how many different directions our nursery inspirations have taken, check out nursery updates one, two, three, and four.

In the last update I talked about the "oh duh" color choice moment I had when I came across this nursery that was done using the same bedding that I like, except with yellow on the walls instead of the pink I kept seeing. If you look in the photos of our house to the right, you'll see that our living room and dining room are painted with the same "garbanzo bean" yellow from Behr paint. When we painted the house two summers ago, we bought more paint than we ended up needing, so we've got some yellow left over. Not only will the yellow look adorable, it will also keep the nursery within the "theme" of our house. Plus, it's "girly" enough to make Bran happy, but not frilly so I'm happy with it, too.

We're hoping to start painting on Monday, and then we'll get all the furniture set up. We were given a gorgeous crib by some friends from church that looks just like the one to the left. It was such a blessing that they were giving the crib away, and with it they also gave us a mattress, sheets, a crib skirt and a bumper!

Yesterday Jen and I drove all over Moscow and Pullman looking for a small dresser that we could use as storage for Emma's clothes and as a changing table, but had no luck at all. I told Bran that we just weren't seeing anything that would work, and this morning when I got up he asked if I'd check our email, and when I did, I found an order confirmation for this gorgeous changing table/dresser combo from walmart! When he saw that I couldn't find anything, he decided to surprise me buy buying this one, which is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I'm so excited. It won't get here until the week she's due, so we might have to improvise for a few days if she comes on time, but it will so be worth it. I love that it's white, so it will match the crib, and the little cubbyholes will be perfect for "diaper time" necessities. I love it :)

So there you go! When the painting and all is underway I'll post some pictures.

Days 4 and 5

Yesterday started out good - I only had to get up once in the night to shower because of itching, and slept the rest of the night, minimal itching during the day, and the bumps on my arm started going away. By the end of the night, though, my legs were so swollen I had trouble standing/sitting and could NOT get comfortable. I took benedryl at 11 to help me sleep, and ended up being awake until 2am.

This morning I woke up at 5 with some itching but was able to go back to sleep. When I got up at 8 my arms itched so badly from the dry skin where the bumps were healing that I decided to put some moisturizer on them. They were so dry that the lotion burned horribly, to the point that it made me cry. Bran helped me calm down and after a few minutes the burning went away and the lotion started to help.

I'm thrilled to announce that I've had NO itching for the rest of the day. My left arm almost looks normal again, and the right should hopefully be there by tomorrow. My legs still look horrible but don't itch anymore. The Dandelion Root and Pine Tar soap worked! I can't tell you how wonderful that is.

The website I read said that one woman's itch stopped after 5 days, and her rash was gone completely by 10, so now I'm hoping that the rash will be gone by Tuesday.

Thank you for all the prayers! I finally feel almost like my normal self again. :)

Day 3

Too itchy to type a whole bunch, so here are the highlights from today:

  • Only slept from midnight-3am last night. Not much fun.
  • Woke up to find that my stomach is completely itch free, and my left arm (the one that was worst) seems to be getting better. It still burns at times, but not like it was.
  • Left arm is now the worse of the two, but it's not terrible.
  • The rash has mostly moved onto my legs at this point, which is terribly uncomfortable. My tar soap showers give me about an hour of relief, and then my legs start to itch in places and then generally burn all over.
  • 37 week dr.'s appointment went well. No dilation, higher blood pressure than I normally have, but not something they're worried about, confirmed that I do in fact have PUPPPS, ok'd Benedryl *HAPPY DANCE! Big plans to drug myself up and get some sleep tonight!* <-- within the bounds of how "drugged up" a preggy lady can be and not harm the baby. :)
  • Dr. asked if I want to talk about inducing a week or two early since having the baby will definitely make the rash go away. I told her I want to hang in there as long as possible before thinking about induction. As of right now I feel like I can make it to 40+ weeks, but I told her we'll see how I'm feeling in another few weeks and talk again :)
Whew. Ok that's all for today.

Day 2...

I spent yesterday washing with Grandpa's soap, drinking dandelion tea, and popping freeze dried dandelion capsules... now the countdown to potential relief starts! The sites I found said that most women stop itching by day 5, so that's what I'm hoping for. I might even be lenient and let Friday be my "is the itching gone yet?" deadline.

As for today, things are still pretty bad. I did sleep more last night than the night before (12-3, 4:30- until my alarm went off at 6:45). From 3-4:30 I grabbed some towels that I had tossed in the freezer earlier that night and just used them to cool everything down. When I woke up the itching was back in full force, and thanks to my exhaustion and frustration I broke down. Bran is always the amazing encourager, and he just told me that it will go away eventually, and that for now I need to simply stick to my plan and keep doing what I'm doing. So I went down and took a cool bath and washed with the soap again (which amazingly does relieve the itching for about an hour and a half). I had a cup of the tea this morning and took my pill. Now I've just gotta do that for the next few days and see what happens!

Oh! I'm not sure if this is related to my new regimen, but I noticed last night that the bumps on my belly, where this whole shebang started, have improved greatly. My belly really doesn't itch anymore, and where my stretch marks were bright red and raised before, they've become much smoother and toned down quite a bit. So I guess that's good news, huh? I'm hoping this means that my hands will clear up next, followed by my legs and arms.

the PUPPS chronicles

Ok so now that it's not 5:30 in the morning and I'm not currently contemplating the variety of things I can do to keep myself from scratching, I'm going to tell you a little more about this whole PUPPPS thing.

Since I couldn't sleep last night, and simply laying in bed wasn't an option (you try laying still in bed with your skin crawling and fight the urge to scratch yourself to death...), I decided to use my time to research this horrid thing robbing me of sleep. I'm now (obviously) an expert on it.

According to several different websites, the condition (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy) shows up in 1 in 150 pregnancies, usually in the end of the third trimester (mine showed up at 36 weeks). The medical sites say that steroid creams and pills help "reduce the symptoms" but that the rash won't really go away until you just have the baby. When I told my doc about it, she ran a blood test for a rare liver disease that can show itself in a rash (thankfully that came back negative) and gave me a prescription for a cream. She said to only apply it twice a day in a thin layer, and doing just that the little tube lasted me a day and a half, without much relief. I switched to gold bond anti itch stuff and that gave me a little relief, but not enough to help me sleep. I've gone through 2 tubes of gold bond in the past 3 days.

Well, folks, putting up with this for at least the next 3 weeks just isn't gonna cut it for me. So I kept res
earching and came across a British site where a woman used Dandelion Root pills to treat it, and her itching stopped after 5 days, and the rash was completely gone by day 10. After finding that site, I googled PUPPPS and dandelion root, and found several more success stories. Let me tell you, I've never been more thankful for the Moscow Co-op and all their hippie remedies!

Along with the pills, several sites recommended drinking dandelion root tea and bathing with this soap called (I kid you not) Grandpa's Pine Tar soap. At this point, I'm willing to try anything, so while I was at the Co-op looking for all things dandelion, I thought I might as well see if they had the Grandpa stuff, (although in the back of my mind I was sure someone had made it up). Sure enough, there it was right between the old-time lavender soap and Burts Bees! The soap is used for skin conditions like eczema and is supposed to help with the itch.

When I got home, I popped one of the pills, took a shower with the soap and I'm currently sipping on some of the tea. The pills seem fine - they're just capsules filled with freeze-dried, ground up dandelion and it doesn't get much more natural than that!) the soap definitely seems to have helped with the itching as I've only had to put some gold bond on my left arm which has the most severe rash, and the tea tastes like chicken stock.

My plan is to watch the rash for the next 5 days and see if anything changes. Praying so hard that it helps!

How big is baby?

Week 37 - She's the size of a watermelon!

How far along: 37 weeks - I'm officially FULL TERM!!

Maternity Clothes: Living in my sweats, and loving my long black skirt - super comfy.

Stretch Marks: yep...

Sleep: Over the past week I got a skin rash called PUPPPS (something something something pregnancy something). It's a pregnancy rash that 1 in 150 pregnant women get (yay me!). Basically it's the worst thing ever. Like hives all over that itch and burn and supposedly it doesn't go away until you have the baby. When I heard that, I told Bran I'm going to start doing jumping jacks until she comes. I've been researching it like crazy and it sounds like the only thing that works to get rid of it is this herbal remedy called Dandelion Root Extract. I'll be buying some from the Co-op tomorrow and I'm soooo praying that it takes this awful thing away.

Oh I posted all that under "sleep" because thanks to the rash I'm not sleeping at all. I was lucky enough to get some sleep Friday night thanks to exhausting myself at work, but last night I slept for a total of 1 hour, which is why I'm posting this at 5:30 in the morning. Ugh.

Best Moment this Week: Picked up everyone from the airport last night!

Movement: She's currently dancing around from side to side in my belly :)

Food Cravings: None that I can remember...

Gender: She's most definitely all girl!

Labor Signs: Still nothing, and thanks to the rash I'm ready for them to start!

Belly Button: Changes from innie to outie depending on where Emma is - it's so strange!

What I Miss: Not itching.

What I'm Looking Forward to this Week: Dr. appointment on Monday!

Weekly Wisdom: Trust in God for everything. <-- same as last week, but this time as a reminder for me as I struggle with the rash... He knows what I can handle and will protect and comfort me no matter what!

How big is baby?

36 Weeks - She's about as heavy as a crenshaw melon, weighing in at roughly 6 lbs!

How far along: 36 weeks

Maternity Clothes: I've grown a lot in the past few weeks, so we're moving from the cute maternity clothes to just the comfy ones. Loving my sweatpants these days!

Stretch Marks: yep...

Sleep: After working 2 long nights in a row, I slept through the night for the first time in months last night. Who knew all I needed was to bring myself to a point of utter exhaustion to get some sleep?!

Best Moment this Week: The time I've gotten to spend washing and folding all my little baby clothes. I'm soo excited for her to be able to wear them!

Movement: She's still my little acrobat, waving her arms and kicking her feet.

Food Cravings: None that I can remember...

Gender: She's most definitely all girl!

Labor Signs: None yet, which is good because I've still got a few days left at work.

Belly Button: The area right around my belly button has gone numb, and the rest of my belly has started to itch... soo annoying!

What I Miss: Being able to sit or stand for more than 5 minutes without getting uncomfortable.

What I'm Looking Forward to this Week: My last day at work is Friday, and Jen comes home Saturday!

Weekly Wisdom: Trust in God for everything. It is amazing what He uses to fulfill our needs!

New Nursery Inspiration

I know, again! We just can't make up our minds when it comes to our little girl's nursery. Our latest idea resulted from a picture I found online of a nursery with the bedding we picked out as it's theme:

If you've been to our house, you know that the main color is a pretty "garbanzo bean" yellow. When I saw this, I thought "DUH!" We already have all the paint we would need, and the pink accessories with the yellow walls look adorable! Plus the nursery will still work with the flow of the whole house (we used colors that all compliment each other in the entire house, with the exception of Tyler's rooms which he painted himself). Here are a few more pictures of what they did, and what we hope to use as a diving board for our own nursery:

So there you have it! I'm not crazy about their curtains (just not a fan of the silk material), and I'll be tying in more pink accessories than they used, but overall I think it should turn out great!

Now if the guys can just get that bathroom installed so we can paint and get decorating.......

“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.” – Lin Yutang

Our trip to the East Coast was great. We started with the Antkowiaks in North Carolina and then drove to Maryland to be with my family for a few days. Some of the best moments included:
  • Getting our favorite Christmas gift from the Antkowiaks... They wrote and recorded a song for Emmaline, which you can watch here.
  • Ashley's morning at the Spa with Jeff and Karen. Pedicure and a Prenatal Massage - it couldn't have been better!
  • Flying kites on the beach
  • All the seafood we could eat
  • Stopping at the Grave Digger headquarters on our way up to Maryland (Bran enjoyed this a little more than I did, but it was still fun :) )
  • Surprising my parents by showing up at their New Year's Eve party when we told them we wouldn't be there until New Year's day. Everyone was so excited to see us!
  • Getting to spend time just being with my family. At one point Bran had gone out with his dad and it was just Mom, Dad, me, Jen and Gregg all sitting in the living room talking like we used to when we all lived at home!
  • My mom threw the most beautiful baby shower for me on Sunday. It was wonderful, and we got so many great gifts for Emmaline! My favorite things about the shower were the theme (Ducks and Daisies - how cute!) and the gorgeous cake Valerie made for us:

As you can tell, we had a wonderful trip! Something else that made the trip so much fun was finding out how many of our Maryland friends read my blog! It seems like everyone I talked to said how much they like keeping up with us through my little updates. I can't tell you what that means to me!

I have lots of videos to sort through from the trip, and I have some new sonogram pictures to scan, so check back in the next few days for another update!

How big is baby?

35 Weeks - She's as heavy as a Honeydew!

How far along: 35 weeks

Maternity Clothes: Some of the ones I got early on don't fit anymore!

Stretch Marks: yep...

Sleep: Sleep? What's that?

Best Moment this Week: Getting to see our families!

Movement: She's still moving like crazy. I learned at our ultrasound today that the little thing I've been feeling nudging my side is her elbow - crazy!

Food Cravings: Got more Dunkin Donuts today - yumm!

Gender: She's most definitely all girl!

Labor Signs: According to the ultrasound tech, we've got zero progress, which is what we want. She needs to bake for a few more weeks!

Belly Button: Still in the in-between stage... not quite in, but not all the way out.

What I Miss: Being healthy! I got a head cold and just can't kick it :(

What I'm Looking Forward to this Week: While we're in Spokane tomorrow, we're going shopping at Babies R Us - I'm so excited!

Weekly Wisdom: Family is the best thing ever.
