front and center

I haven't gotten to watch her show, but I've really enjoyed reading Emily Henderson's blog. She does episode recaps and posts photos of the spaces she designs. So far this is the only one that made me go "huh?"

At first glance it looks like something I'd love - casual, light, airy, and comfortable. But something just felt off. I realized pretty quickly that this living room has as its focal point the tv! There's no conversation area - everything but the couch and the tiny green chair in the corner faces the tv. I hate it! Were this my room, I would have ditched the chaise, gotten another chair/ottoman combo to match the white one and flipped them so they were facing the couch. I'm not even going to think about the attention being taken away from what is most likely a beautiful fireplace in the lower right hand corner....

What do you think?

  1. Also, I would say that the color of the curtains was a terrible choice. Tall ceilings call for the colors to be distributed vertically as well as horizontally. She has too much weight on the bottom half of the room for what she has (or hasn't) done with the top half.

  2. I definitely think you're right. I felt like something else was wrong but couldn't put my finger on it. I wonder what the deal was!

  3. This definitely wasn't my favorite room of hers either! But I "got" why she decided to lay it out like that. The fire place was in the middle of the room across from the entrance to the room and on the other side of the fireplace is the dining area. It would have been awkward to walk right into the living space, and then the dining area would have had to be butted up against the living space. Plus it wasn't a working fireplace either.

And I don't really mind rooms being laid out somewhat around the TV as long as it still lends itself to being conversational as well. But yeah, just wasn't loving the color choices. I think the paint color is really turning me off. Feels too cool and not warm and inviting.
