{the "cast" of Olivia} |
There are not many kid's tv shows I like (no Yo Gabba Gabba for us... it creeps me out!), but I have found that Olivia stands out from the rest. The most recent episode Emma and I watched (read: she watched it stuck in her highchair since she wouldn't take a nap and I listened while I caught up on emails and facebook) was all about Olivia getting to know her Grandma. This line caught my attention:
"It's good to learn new things about family members - and then remember those things" - Olivia's Grandmother.
My mother-in-law is fantastic at this. One of the many things she does is always asks close friends and family what their favorite thing to drink is and then makes sure that she has it on hand whenever they visit. It is such a wonderful display of hospitality and I really want to follow in her footsteps by doing the same.

What do you think? Have you ever learned something new or interesting about a family member? Do you have your own way of making your guests feel special?
Karen is the sweetest lady ever, you're very lucky to have her as a mother-in-law!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I find children's television soothing. Sometimes...absolutely disturbing. I really love Bear in the Big Blue House. Is he still on? He's one of my favorites. And is there one called "The Upside Down Show"? I think my niece watches it and I love how interactive and creative it is.
ReplyDeleteI think the thing I learned from my mother was that you should treat all of your guests as if they were more important than you. That's certainly the attitude my mother had when we were growing up and had (literally) HUNDREDS of people visit us. If I can be half the hostess my mother is, I will be satisfied.
You know what? I'm totally inspired. Gonna have to blog about this sometime this week!
Naomi, I know! I am so grateful for the relationship I have with her.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, I'm glad I inspired you! I don't recognize either of those shows, but Em really only watches tv first thing in the morning and while I'm cooking dinner, so maybe they're on during the day :) Olivia definitely falls on the side of soothing rather than disturbing! That's so sweet about your Mom, too. My parents have a super tiny house but somehow they were always able to fit way more people in it than I ever thought possible!
Your mother-in-law was a blessing to me as a friend even before she became such a blessing to you :)
ReplyDeleteI know, Mom - I love that you knew her well before I did :)
