New house inspiration

Bran and I loved making over our current house, and can't wait to get started on the next one.  We'll most likely be renting from my parents, and they've given us the ok to do whatever improvements we want.  Since we'll be renting, we don't want to go crazy, but at the same time we'll be living there for the next few years and want to make it something we love.

I haven't done any crazy planning yet since we won't be moving in until July, but I have started looking for some inspiration, and this is what I've found so far:

I love so many things about this room.  The white walls contrasted with the black chair and mirror,
the wood floors, and the patterned curtain are so perfect!
If I could capture the feeling this room has in my own home, I'd be thrilled.

This little girl's room is adorable.  I love that it's so simple.

  • I'm really loving gray bedrooms. It lets you add unexpected pops of color, which is so much fun.
Not only do I love that this room is gray, but the matching nightstands and lamps look so nice and symmetrical.
This room is gorgeous.  Love the chandelier, and the big open window. And, once again, the gray is too cool.

    • I'm also in love with tan/brown walls.  I'm not sure that the house will have enough natural light for us to pull off something so dark, but if I ever have a house with huge windows, I'm going to work brown in there somewhere!

    Purging: Second Installment

Since my last post, we've had quite the on-going discussion about purging in our house.  I suppose it's one of those topics you don't realize is a hot one until you bring it up! I've come to realize that the way different people view possessions has everything to do with their specific situation.

For instance, until I was 18 and in college, I lived in the same neighborhood. I lived in the same house until I was 16 (at 16 I moved across the street to keep my Grandmother company).  Every single one of my childhood memories is attached to that street in that neighborhood.  As a result, things don't hold sentimental value for me - places do.  My situation isn't the norm, though, and I realize that.

My House - I remember swinging in that tree in springtime and
the petals falling off the flowers, making it look like it was snowing.
I remember painting that front porch, and when Dad had to fix the
roof.  I remember that cast-iron planter and the flowers Mom would
plant every spring. My memories are here.

Having a baby has forced me to modify the way I look at things, though.  We were given many many things for Emmaline, a lot of them by people she'll never remember.  I have no desire to get rid of these things - I want to someday be able to tell her about these wonderful people that were in our lives when we lived in Idaho, and to show her the things they made for her or gave her.  The same goes for cards people gave her - if it had a note written to her in it, I saved it and stuck it in my "Emmaline" binder with her birth certificate, etc.  I consider letters to her "important papers", and I want her to someday be able to go through and read all the wonderful things people wrote to her.  Bran and I were talking about it, and we can't wait for her to have a favorite blanket or toy or teddy bear.  If I were to try and purge her things now, she wouldn't get to pick - I'd be picking for her, and I don't think that's right! I'm not saying that once she has a favorite I'm going to get rid of everything else, but that those things are hers and someday she can be the one who decides to keep or purge them.

In the same way, I feel free to purge my things.  I didn't always feel this way, though.  I used to keep every letter I was ever sent.  I realized that I wasn't sure why I was keeping them - I had some vague idea that someday I'd want to read them again, but when was someday? So one day I sat down and read all of my letters.  I kept a few that were special to me (one my Uncle wrote me when I got married, another my Mother-in-law wrote at the same time, a few Bran wrote while we were courting, and a few others), and threw the others away. It felt wonderful!

I feel that I need to clarify on one point: I'm not completely unsentimental.  There are certain things I'll never get rid of, but I'm picky.  I'll always have the scrapbook my friend made of our trip to the Bahamas, and the one another friend made for me of her and I (I'll also always have the painting she did for me - it's going to be on the wall in our new nursery). I'll keep the champagne glasses and cake cutting tools from our wedding.  I have a bus stub from the trip Jen and I took to Ireland during my last Spring Break. I have my high school lit class journals, and an essay I wrote on St. Augustine in 4th grade.  I'm not overly sentimental, but I'm not unsentimental.

Tsh on simplemom.net has some great thoughts about purging that I've found helpful:
One thing I learned when we moved overseas regarding the “sentimental” stuff – much of the stuff is attached to the memory behind it. What we’re sentimental about sometimes is the memory, not the thing itself. This isn’t true for everything, of course, but a lot of times, we don’t even really like the thing, but we feel like we need to keep it. Perhaps give yourself permission to still enjoy that memory, but to not need the thing in order to remember it.

She later suggests that if you feel like you're going to lose the memory by getting rid of something, take a picture of it and put it in an album.  Then every time you look through your albums, you think of those same memories, without having the clutter.

Check back in the next few days for a post about the process of purging: how to decide whether you should let something go and what to do with the things you want to purge.

Please comment with your thoughts! I'd love to know whether you agree, disagree, or what strategies you use to prevent clutter.

    Packing Up!

You really can't appreciate how much stuff you have until you start putting it all in cardboard boxes to be moved. Bran and I moved to Idaho just a month after getting married in Maryland, so we were able to ask people to order our wedding gifts online and have them shipped to our new house. I'm now kicking myself for not saving all that packing material! We were fortunate enough to get a bunch of different sized moving boxes from a friend of ours (and by a bunch I mean a bunch!). I think I might still swing by the local U-Haul store and see about picking up one of their dish saver kits for our lovely Crate & Barrel dishes. I think not having to worry about them getting broken will be worth the $10.

I love to pack, but mostly I love to purge. I feel so free being able to get rid of things I don't use or want! I recently read an article that I think I found on Simplemom.net about purging, and it backed up all of my beliefs when it comes to purging belongings. I'm bummed that I didn't bookmark it, because now I can find it. But the gist of the article was that you should feel free to get rid of ANYTHING - a gift, something you bought, something handmade, etc. If you don't use it/ it doesn't fit with your style, don't keep it! I'm going to keep looking for the article because it was fabulous.

    Fossil

My wonderful parents, Aunt, and Grandmother all sent me money for my birthday a few weeks ago, and after going shopping for some spring clothes, I still had some money left over. I've always had cheap-o purses and never really cared to buy a nice one until recently, so that's what I decided to use the rest of my money for. I've had the same purse for the past 4 years at least, and it is so time for a new one.

On one of my trips to the mall to buy clothes, I stopped into Ross (a discount store just like Marshalls or TJ Maxx) and came across this bag from Lucky Brand Jeans:

I thought it was adorable and loved the funky pattern, but then saw this one from Fossil and realized that I really wanted something a little more sophisticated:

It retails on the Fossil website for $158, but I got it for $70. Gotta love Ross!

    Busy, busy, busy.

I feel like we've just been going nonstop around here! Bran's folks left on Sunday, and this week has flown by.

We've got some big news to finally tell everyone (no, we're not pregnant again!)...

    We're moving home!

We want Emmaline's grandparents to be a part of her life, so we have decided to uproot and move back home to Maryland! We're very excited, but sad to leave Idaho at the same time. Bran will be working for his Dad's design agency (ADG - nominated one of the top 25 places to work in Baltimore!). We're very excited about the move!

We'll be packing up and heading out on or around May 23. Bran's mom is flying out the week before we leave to help us pack the truck, then we'll all (our family + Karen and Tyler) drive down to Buhl, ID so Emma can meet her great-great grandma Lolo. From there Bran will take off by truck while the rest of us fly home. It will be quite the trip, but I'm excited!

It's hard to believe that it's already/only been 2 years since we had Penske rental truck in our driveway, and here we are, doing it all again!

    Inspiration

Bri, an "interweb friend" of mine (we met through a pregnancy message board called the bump and had our girls just a few weeks apart) posted this link to an Etsy fabric shop.  I LOVE these fabrics - they make me wish I sewed more (more being more than two times ever in my life - a bag when I was 8 and a skirt at 16). So if/when I start to sew, I want to buy this fabric collection and do something fun with it:

I love the little coffee mugs with donuts! It's just so cute and fun - I'd love to do a little girl's room with all of them!

I'm also loving the site for color/pattern inspiration.  I have the hardest time making a color palatte - I know what colors I like, but am awful at matching those colors with fun patterns.  The inspiration is great!

    Oh, Spring!

I'm dying for you to be here!

We've had our fair share of winter weather this week, complete with hail and a bit of snow (both melted before landing, thankfully). Even though our actual winter was mild compared to other years, it just doesn't seem to be over yet! It has been cold and overcast and just gloomy for the past few days, and I've had enough.  I want green fields, the sun, and flowers that don't look confused!

With all of this mundane weather, it's hard to believe Sunday is Easter already.  When I think of Easter, it brings up memories of egg hunts in the front yard, warm, sunny weather, and having to wear a froofy dress (though I considered any dress to be "froofy" in my younger days).

Speaking of froofy dresses, I realized that I don't have an Easter dress for Emmaline to wear (I know, how hypocritical of me to have hated dresses so when I was little, and now am talking about stuffing my child into one... oh well she can argue the inconsistency when she's older). I think I'm going to go shopping tomorrow to get her one.  I figure this will be the only Easter that she won't enjoy an actual gift, and the only Easter that she won't be eating any candy, so I can get away with having a dress be her gift.  When  I was little I also considered clothes to be the worst gift ever.  I know, I'm a horrible mother. When she's old enough to know what's going on I promise not to give her clothes as gifts. :)
